The 2nd Annual East Riding YFC Charity Tractor Road Run has been hailed a huge success by the organisers of the
event. Over 70 tractors took to the roads on Sunday 31st May 2009 in an effort to raise funds for Yorkshire Air
Ambulance & The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI). Their efforts certainly paid off as the money
raised currently stands at over £1000 which will be split between the two charities.
Sunday morning brought clear skies and bright sunshine – a relief following last years downpours! Tractor drivers came from all parts of the East Riding including Huggate, Driffield, Preston, Hornsea and Holme on Spalding Moor.
Jenny Sleight, who helped to organise the event on behalf of East Riding YFC said “I love the fact that such a wide age range of people can share the same hobby. It is amazing to see a 70 year old tractor alongside an 09 plate!”
The run covering over 30 miles set off from Laburnum Farm, Etton and was led by John Sleight on his Nuffield 10/60. “I really enjoy doing road runs and it’s a lovely way to take in the countryside – especially when the weather is as kind as it was on Sunday.” As the tractors weaved their way round the country lanes they took in a number of villages and the tractors were greeted enthusiastically by people who had turned out to see them and support the charities. John added “It is great to have such support from the villagers who were out in force to welcome us and give us a friendly and encouraging wave”
Jenny Sleight, paid tribute to all who had helped with the event. “I would like to thank all the drivers, marshals and collectors for their support on the day, also the lunch hosts Donovan and Caley Sackur for letting us use their yard and facilities.” Jenny also remarked on the backing that had been received from businesses including Lidl of Driffield, Mr Moo’s Ice Cream and Cracking Crackling from Pocklington. She also expressed gratitude to everyone who had donated before, during and after the day “Money was received from all areas and is still rolling in now – people have been very generous.”
Jenny went on to say that the money raised will be presented to the two charities at Driffield Show on Wednesday 22nd July. “We would love to see as many drivers and supporters as possible on the YFC stand at 1pm when we will make the presentations on their behalf”
Tractor enthusiasts and members of East Riding YFC will join together and take to the roads on Sunday 31st May 2009 to raise vital funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance & The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).
Following the success of last years event East Riding YFC have organised their second Charity Tractor Road Run and are pleased with the support they are receiving from the members of YFC and local vintage tractor groups. The tractors will leave Laburnum Farm, Etton, Near Beverley at 10am on 31st May for a road trip covering approximately 30 miles round East Yorkshire.
Last year the event raised £1046 and Mr John Sleight from Laburnum Farm was keen to host what has now been labelled as an ANNUAL Charity Tractor Road Run! Entries have already been received from well over 50 tractors and Mr Sleight is particularly excited by the range of tractors that are attending. “We have had entries from a wide range of tractors – one is almost 70 years old and one is less than 6 months old!”
The two charities that have been chosen this year have particular relevance for YFC members and the rural community. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a charity close to the heart of many people who live and work in rural areas who never know when they may need the fast response emergency service. The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) is a grant-making charity that supports members of the farming community facing need, hardship or distress. RABI has a significant reference to YFC members as their National Vice Chairman lost his arm in a farming accident and has been supported by RABI who helped him in many ways including financial support to modify his home.
Jenny Sleight is helping to organise the event and she said “If you see the tractors please support them with a friendly wave!” Collectors will accompany the parade as it follows the planned route and donations will be gratefully received for the two charities. The procession of tractors will pass through parts of Etton, Goodmanham, Market Weighton, Londesborough, Warter, Huggate, Tibthorpe, Bainton, Neswick, Bracken, Lund, Holme on the Wolds and South Dalton before returning to Etton.
Entries for the road run have already been received from various parts of East Yorkshire including Driffield, Holme on Spalding Moor and Hornsea. Further information including Entry Forms and Conditions of Entry can be obtained from Jenny Sleight on 01430 810281, 07801 414071 or email jenbopeep@hotmail.com.
Jenny went on to say “We were overwhelmed by the generosity of people last year and I am really excited to see if we can raise more money this year” “Last year it rained so we’re all keeping our fingers crossed for a lovely day and lots of support” she added.
Over 500 YFC members and their family and friends flocked to Riplingham Grange, Riplingham near Little Weighton on Saturday 23rd May 2009 for their Annual County Rally. The County Rally is the highlight of the year for many YFC members when they meet their friends and rivals from other clubs from the East Riding of Yorkshire Federation of YFC to take part in over 90 different of competitions.
This years Rally Committee Chairman was Danny Jackson from Beverley YFC and he praised the efforts of the teams taking part, he said “The statics shed was buzzing from 8am with members displaying their hard work showing skills in cookery, crafts and an array of other creations!”.
The site for The 2009 County Rally was selected last Autumn and since then the committee have worked with the hosts, Andrew and Pam Woodall to prepare for the day. Danny said “The committee have worked very hard to put together the rally and the hosts have been very helpful and supportive – what more could I ask for?”
Active classes ran throughout the day from 9am until 4pm and saw members undertaking skillful tasks of flower arranging, stockjudging and carpentry. There were also more fun competitions taking place such as yard of ale, pickled onion eating and welly walking! Judges on the day commented that they had difficults tasks deciding the winners in their classes and that there was a high standard of competition.
Winners of many of the events will now be invited to have the honour of representing their club and county at the Northern Area Field Day on 20th June at Thirsk when East Riding YFC will compete against YFC members from all of the North of England.
For the third year running the much coveted Lady Katherine Phillips Trophy for most points on the day was awared to Brandesburton & District YFC. This year the runners up were Beacon YFC followed by Thorngumbald YFC in third place. A further seven trophies went to Brandesburton and their members for individual and team achievements. Bridlington & District YFC were the well deserved winners of the trophy for clubs with under 23 members and Bainton & Distirct YFC took the cup for clubs with under 28 members.
East Riding YFC County Chairman, Ell Proudfoot announced the results and paid tribute to the members dedication to their clubs. Ell said “I am always very proud to be associated with East Riding YFC and on days like The County Rally it is great to see so many members having so much fun.”
On Saturday 14th June 2008 YFC members from all parts of Northern England will make the road (and sea!) trip to Moor Edge Farm, Brandesburton, East Yorkshire to compete in the Northern Area Field Day.
Northern Area Field Day is a one day event in the YFC calendar when the winners from seven counties in the North of England take part in the finals of over 30 activities. Teams will be welcomed from Cumbria, Durham, Isle of Man, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire to compete against the host team from East Riding YFC.
Entrance to the event is free and it is a great family day out to see the high standard of competition and friendly rivalry between the teams in events ranging from Tug of War to Stockjudging and Male Floral Art to Fashion. Also new for 2008 is Northern Area’s Got Talent which will see a range of members displaying varied skills and talent. Some of the competitions are also eliminators for National Finals.
East Riding of Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs (ERYFYFC) are very proud to be welcoming members, guests and friends to the 2008 Northern Area Field Day. A team of highly motivated, dedicated and experienced YFC members was formed a year ago and they are all committed to making the 2008 Northern Area Field Day the best event of its kind in recent years.
The committee is chaired by Mark Richardson, a club leader at Brandesburton YFC who outlined the event “YFC members have been taking part in qualifiers for the Field Day events since last autumn and we are sure we will have a very high standard of competition on Saturday.” He went on to say “As a YFC member the Field Day gives individuals and teams chance to show their skills to a wider audience and the level of competition is similar to what is experienced in a National YFC Final.”
The day’s events start at 10am and active classes run through until 3.30pm. There are also static exhibits will can be viewed in the afternoon. Following the day’s events the Field Day Dance will be held on the same site. Tickets are available to pre-buy for the dance at £8 from East Riding YFC County Office on The Showground at Driffield. More information can be obtained by calling 01377 256637.
Mark Richardson hopes that the East Riding YFC team can do well on the day. “We’ve got a good bunch of members from all around the county who have won through to take their places in the team on the day” said Mark. “There isn’t a home advantage as such except that our team members won’t have to get up quite so early!!” he added.
The first ever East Riding YFC Charity Tractor Road Run has been hailed a great success by the organisers
of the event. Over 30 tractors took to the roads on Sunday 1st June 2008 in an effort to raise funds for Yorkshire
Air Ambulance and Hull Royal Infirmary Neurology Department. And their efforts certainly paid off as the
money raised currently stands at over £1,000 which will be split between the two charities.
Sunday morning brought cloudy skies and heavy rain but it wasn’t enough to put the tractor enthusiasts off even though many of them were vintage tractors offering no protection from the elements!
Tractor drivers came from all parts of the East Riding including Huggate, Driffield, Grindale, Pocklington and Holme on Spalding Moor. A contingent of YFC members also joined the run from the Holderness area proudly displaying their “Thorngumbald YFC On Tour” Union Jack flags.
Liz Vickerton, East Riding YFC County Chairman said “When I woke up and looked at the weather I really wondered if the day could still go as well as we had hoped.” Liz, a patient in HRI Neurology earlier this year went on to say “The event exceeded all our expectations – we never dreamt of raising in excess of £800.”
The run set off from Laburnum Farm, Etton and was led by John Sleight on his Nuffield 10/60. “It was great to have such an age range of tractors (and drivers!) on the run, the oldest tractor was from 1940 and we had an 08 plate too!” John commented. As the tractors weaved their way round the country lanes they took in a number of villages and the tractors were greeted enthusiastically by people who had turned out to see them and support the charities. John added “Everyone seemed pleased to see us out on the roads and we had lots of friendly waves which was encouraging when many of us were soaked to the skin!”
Jenny Sleight, who helped to organise the event paid tribute to all who had helped with the event. “I would like to thank all the drivers, marshals and collectors for their support on the day, also the lunch hosts Donovan and Caley Sackur for letting us use their yard and facilities.” Jenny also remarked on the backing that had been received from businesses including Charters Butchers, Tesco at Beverley, Lidl and Costcutter at Driffield who had supplied food for the lunches. She also expressed gratitude to everyone who had donated before, during and after the day “Money was received from all areas and is still rolling in now – people have been very generous.”
When asked if there will be another East Riding YFC Charity Tractor Road Run next year Jenny simply replied “Never Say Never!”
